Safeguarding the Heart: a Weekend retreat with Dorlop Rinpoche Dr. Ly

  • Ecumenical Buddhist Society 1516 West 3rd Street Little Rock, AR, 72201 United States (map)

To cover all the earth with sheets of leather—

Where could such amounts of skin be found?

But with the leather soles of just my shoes

It is as though I cover all the earth!

And thus the outer course of things

I myself cannot restrain.

But let me just restrain my mind,

And what is left to be restrained?

The 8th century Indian Buddhist master, Shantideva encapsulates the Buddhist approach to safeguarding our hearts with these verses. The more we understand the essence and characteristics of our own hearts, the more we will not be dragged around by emotional states that arise from the ever-changing circumstances and conditions of the world. And it is only by gaining the ability to safeguard our own hearts that we will be able to safeguard others.

In this weekend retreat at EBS (and on Zoom), Dorlop Rinpoché, Dr. Lye, will share nuggets of Buddhist wisdom and simple and yet effective techniques to help safeguard our hearts during a time of great change and uncertainty in the U.S. and around the world today.
