Why?

We knew our vintage building had some issues when we bought it in 2021. Broken down HVAC equipment made the building barely inhabitable in the coldest or hottest conditions. There is absolutely no access for wheelchair bound visitors. And aging lighting fixtures drive up energy costs.

Inspired by a significant legacy donation from June Stewart in 2024, the board decided to remedy the most pressing issues, focusing on accessibility, comfort, and efficiency.

What?

Accessiblity - Our entry current ramp is too narrow and has no curbs or railings. It does not meet ADA standards. We are rebuilding the ramp and modifying the front entryway so that everyone can participate. 

Modernizing Mechanical Systems - Installed long ago, the current electrical, water heating, and heating/cooling systems are wearing out. Replacing them will save energy and reduce utility costs while making the building far more comfortable. 

Upgrading Electrical Service - new mechanicals required upgraded electrical service.

New Lighting for Efficiency - All interior lighting fixtures use outdated fluorescent technology. Replacing them with modern fixtures will significantly reduce our operating cots.

Thermal Screens in the Meditation Hall - Already installed, these screens mitigate heat exchange by adding a layer of insulation to the wall of windows

Landscaping - Building a new entry ramp necessitated a redesign of the front-yard landscaping, giving us an opportunity to refresh the building’s public face.

Can We Afford This?

The total cost is $265,000. Knowing this work would become necessary someday, EBS has been aggressively saving money. The $90,000 donation from June Stewart’s estate inspired others to step forward and between them, three amazing donors gave $85,000 earlier this year. In recent weeks, forty three more people have donated another $30,000 with gifts ranging from $10 to $5000 per person - an amazing vote of support from the EBS community. Combined with our savings, we have gathered more than 80% of the money we need, and just to be safe, we secured a construction loan that will cover any fundraising gaps.

What Will the Work Entail?

Work is scheduled to begin in early August. Subcontractors are coordinating their work so that the building is shut down as briefly as possible, but we expect the building will be closed for four to six weeks. Please stay tuned to Facebook, our newsletter, and this web page for schedule updates.
