Uplifting Our Space for Comfort, Hospitality, and Efficiency

To preserve and uplift our beautiful, historic building at 1516 W. 3rd Street, EBS is embarking on a major renovation project. The total cost is over $260,000 and will involve these components.

Modernizing Mechanical Systems

Replacing the 1970’s electric, HVAC and water heating systems will reduce ongoing utility costs while making the building more comfortable. ·This is the most expensive part of the project and it involves replacing the boiler-powered HVAC system with modern, energy-efficient ductless units. Condensers will be mounted on the roof and interior units will be installed in every room, providing improved control and comfort throughout the space.

Increased Accessibility and Hospitality

Our old building is not currently welcoming or hospitable for people with mobility issues or in wheelchairs. We did an assessment and determined to meet ADA requirements by replacing the existing ramp, modifying the front entry, and moving bathroom sinks to comply with ADA specifications. BONUS: we have the opportunity to install new landscaping.

New Lighting for Comfort and Efficiency

All interior lighting fixtures use outdated fluorescent technology. Retrofitting them proved to be more expensive that replacing with new fixtures. Architects helped us select fixtures to provide attractive and consistent styles throughout the building. This step will also reduce our ongoing utility bills and earn credits from Entergy.

Thermal Screens in the Meditation Hall

Already installed, these screens will help mitigate heat exchange by adding a layer of insulation to the windows. The screens also facilitate hosting programs during bright sunlight. For example, we can watch movies, zoom events or teachings during the day.

Funding the Work

Thanks to legacy donors Kurt Wilhelm and June Stewart, plus ongoing contributions from current members, EBS has more than half the total construction budget already on hand. We’re also applying for credits from utility companies to offset some of the costs, and a construction loan so that the work can be completed quickly.
